Dragon Boy

"A fair and balanced review"

submission: Dragon Boy
date: November 11, 2009

The glitches everyone mentioned all hit at once whenever I try to play in-screen...but I had absolutely no problems in pop-out mode. The item cost is fairly balanced as long as you do something I mention later in this review. I did take issue at the "mouse-directional-clicking-to-attack " aspect which at close range can become horribly flawed (aka "I'm right up on this guy due to seemingly no collision detection, which direction should I furiously click in?"). But at low quality, I found ti moderately enjoyable as long as you don't mind a bit of grinding. And now I give the tips:

Grind on the semi-boss in Stage Two until about level 20. It's easy, it's fast, it gives lots of experience. Granted, I got a completely "WTF?" drop of "Superior Iron Axe" (100 damage) before the first boss in the game on Normal...so my definition of "fast and easy" may change if you're stuck with the dinky standard weapons. For magic skills, focus first on Nova and reduced casting times for a damage-dealer mage. Regen is also VERY important. The magic orb and frost armor are least important. Use a shield, it makes a world of difference going up against bosses like the huge ghost or king/dragon if you're rocking over 40% block. Switch to a 50 damage mace for the final fight - don't argue, just do. You will HATE the resurrecting witch doctors that run away...make sure you eliminate them ALL in any level with them before bothering with the actual enemies. Hold onto some healing items for the huge ghost and final boss. Make sure you max out your dragon before the final boss.

"Tactics"

Great game, 5/5 10/10 and all that jazz. Helpful hint for players in later stages:

To reduce the amount of items you burn later in the game, around the point of the spy robot grunts, especially waters of life on the mage, equip Blood Blade, have 2x Counter, and after she is dead just keep him in Defend every turn. The enemies will invariably at some point use physical attacks, triggering a counter that will more than heal the damage they have done. And thus you can let them literally throw themselves against a wall until they die.

"Meh"

submission: Revolution: Obama

Cute political brawler, but overall too simplistic controls, repetitive uninspired attacks, poor animation, and overall I felt it relied too much on people disliking Obama. Speaking of that, at least create a somewhat more plausible/sane doomsday scenario if you're going to make this type of game.

"A new genre"

I thought someone had ripped off Achievement Unlocked when I saw the pic...but you've taken the elephant and completely reinvented the idea of a game - though I saw something to this effect once I think...can't remember the name, but it had you throwing yourself off a platform multiple times, but set to different themes.

However - well done, well played!

And yeah, that was on my second playthrough.

"It's great, I 5'ed it, but..."

I stumbled on two glitches that essentially crash your game:

I was on sim course three. I cleared the left sphere, no problem. I cleared the middle sphere and didn't even return to the game screen before I was launched into a third battle against Yellow Devil, Gutsman, and Dynamo. I assumed that my character must have flown to the side like sometimes happens after a battle and that this was the third and hardest sphere. It wasn't, as I just completed the REAL third sphere after a reload. This "boss rush" had a Gutsman that did nothing but auto-heal about 2000 HPs every turn for at least 20 turns after I'd killed the other two bosses. There was no way to win, so I reloaded.

The second just occurred and has really pissed me off. I finished all three spheres in sim course three normally. I went and happened to hit A to talk to the soldier outside the door to Alia's room. I asked him about Prime Attacks. When that whole dialog was done, it auto-launched the dialog again, and I said Nevermind. It auto-launched again, and again, and again...and now I have to go clear sim course three AGAIN because I didn't get a chance to save after beating it.

"Nice effort, but..."

The arrow detection system is broken such that you can never be sure if the game will reward or penalize you for pushing the right arrow. Sometimes perfect hits are penalized, while early hits are rewarded at other times.

That, and the rather lackluster graphics, don't do the game any favors. Speaking of the game, if you're going to call something Guitar Hero don't make it look like DDR. Guitar Hero has 5 buttons, not 4. That really hurt the game's credibility, seeing that.

Totally didn't see that coming. But that was epic comedy. Bonus points for the screaming like a girl.

"Left feeling cheated..."

Meh, it's alright. Familiar turn-based fighting, but made dull by the lack of any real RPG elements. Item buying becomes inconsequential once you realize the utility of spamming Mog on single enemies, esp. in combination with the item rewards from battles. Sword changing is a relative non-entity, with players likely opting for the HP drain sword, or else the defense or offense buff sword. Though the final boss was pleasantly challenging (though the only real challenge), the ending was pretty disappointing. *SPOILER ALERT* Do I really want to play a game that ends with the world being plunged into a veritable post-apocalyptic war after the main characters die? If I wanted to do that, I'd play Fallout 3 backwards.

Secret medals discovered on my playthrough:

Chaos - Summon Catastrophe (warning, can easily wipe out your mage)
Punching Bag - Sit there and take a beating without retaliating (easy to do when you're Mog-spamming)
Terrorist - Buy all bombs at start (plan to Mog-spam for any needed items)

Seriously, I WANT that music! Where can I download it?

Otherwise, interesting despite making no sense to me whatsoever. Some pretty nice art if it was in fact all done by you guys.

"Acceptable, needs work"

date: February 24, 2009

The biggest flaw by far? Continued creep production by the enemy after you destroy the barracks. Followed by an imbalance even on Easy where enemies wear down your towers but your creeps don't wear down theirs. Followed by no special hero abilities. Otherwise, a passable DotA clone.
